Periodontal Disease and Preventative Therapy

TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOUR TEETH AND GUMS CAN HELP YOU LIVE WELL – AND LONGER.

  • It’s a fact. Evidence indicates that there is a definite connection between oral and overall body health.  Just as the state of your body can affect your mouth, problems in your mouth likewise can have a direct impact on the rest of your body.  In one recent study, people with serious gum disease, periodontitis, were 40% more likely to also have a chronic condition. And certain diseases, such as diabetes, have a reciprocal relationship with periodontitis – inflammation in the mouth complicates diabetes which in turn elevates conditions for more gum infection.

So how can you protect the health of your mouth? The first defence is practising good oral hygiene daily. And your hygienist is here to help you learn how. From selecting the proper toothbrush and dental floss to demonstrating the most effective techniques in brushing and flossing, your hygienist can answer nitty-gritty questions and show the ins and outs.

The second bastion to keeping your gateway to overall well-being problem-free is regular, comprehensive teeth cleaning performed by your hygienist. She’ll carefully examine your teeth, mouth and gums, looking for any signs of trouble, and take any necessary dental x-rays. Then, using specialized instruments and techniques, she’ll carefully remove plaque, tartar and stains from above and below your gum line. And to finish, she’ll polish your teeth and apply fluoride gel or other treatments as required.

Ahhh, there’s nothing better than the tingly sensation of a clean, fresh mouth. And the knowing that you’ve done all you can to make sure that your oral health is in the pink.
